The Institute for Energy Efficiency in Production (EEP) at the University of Stuttgart develops practical technologies and systemic concepts to promote sustainable, bioeconomy-oriented industrial production.

A particular focus is placed on the integration of bioenergy solutions, the use of biogenic raw materials, and the development of strategies for carbon capture and utilization (CCU) in order to make industrial energy use climate-neutral and contribute to the decarbonization of production.

One topic of our research is the development of industrial-scale biohydrogen (Bio-H₂) production, as well as the co-production of high-value compounds for the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries using the purple bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum. We are utilizing a novel process engineering technology in which fructose extracted from residual plant biomass streams is used as a substrate to produce Bio-H₂ with R. rubrum. The process operates under low-oxygen conditions in the dark, making it suitable for industrial-scale facilities.
