We Combine Biology and Technology

The Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB develops and optimizes processes, technologies, and products for health, sustainable chemistry, as well as environmental and climate protection. We rely on the combination of biological and process engineering expertise to create solutions for patient-specific healthcare, a sustainable bioeconomy, and a climate-neutral, resource-efficient circular economy. We offer our clients research services ranging from feasibility studies to application-ready developments, complemented by a broad spectrum of analytical and testing services. Comprehensive solutions from laboratory to pilot scale are among the institute’s core strengths.

Key Focus Areas in the Field of Bioeconomy:

  • Development, optimization, and scaling of processes for the treatment and conversion of renewable raw materials, biogenic residues, and CO₂ into chemicals, materials, and fuels

  • Selective and efficient separation of mixtures and processing of synthesis products using membranes, adsorber particles, thermal, and extraction methods

  • Water management and water technologies for municipalities, industry, and agriculture, with a focus on circular use, and the recovery of energy and valuable substances

  • (Re-)utilization of industrial, agricultural, and municipal waste streams for the recovery of valuable and nutrient substances as well as the production of biogas or biohydrogen
