The Institute of Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Waste Management at the University of Stuttgart is a nationally and internationally recognized environmental engineering institute dealing with issues of water quality and drinking water supply, wastewater treatment, hydrochemistry, hydrobiology, environmental analytics as well as municipal waste management and exhaust air purification. It has its own teaching and research wastewater treatment plant (approx. 10,000 population equivalents), which enables the implementation of complex purification tasks and the testing of new innovative technologies under large-scale conditions in a wide range of operating conditions. The Institute comprises approx. 105 employees with an annual third-party funding volume of approx. 4 million €. The Institute has project-related know-how and equipment for the development and testing of innovative wastewater, waste and exhaust air treatment processes, in the procedural and microbial evaluation and optimization of processes, biodegradation research, biotransformation, in the valorization of waste and recyclable material flows, in biocenosis analysis, detoxification and disinfection, trace substance analysis, impact-related analysis for ecotoxicological effects, as well as via an established system of knowledge transfer and public relations activities with politicians, municipalities and industry representatives.
