IFB in the SRI ValBio.

The Institute for Aircraft Design (IFB) is part of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy at the University of Stuttgart and is actively involved in the topic of bio-based materials and structures in the SRI ValBio. Research and development in the areas of lightweight construction simulation and the manufacture and production of fibre reinforced composites is considered over the complete design, manufacturing process chain and product life cycles. The projects aim to develop and apply the demand for environmentally compatible and reusable engineering materials, which can also be manufactured from bio-based and already available resources, across all sectors.

An example of this is the further development and scaling of a process for the production of flax/chitosan composites together with Dr. Linus Stegbauer from the IGCV, which could also be used in lightweight panels/sandwich panels (e.g. with light wood inside). The flax/chitosan composite material should meet the highest standards in production, use and disposal/recycling.

Furthermore, there is close cooperation with the BioMat working group of Jun. Prof. Hanaa Dahy in the design, production and application of flax fibre reinforced polymers in architecture.
